guess an easy way to settle the debate aside from dyno pulls would be to compare log data between one tank and the next. what i would expect to see is timing being pulled with lower octane...in fact, i know it will pull timing to reduce knock which is caused by lower octane fuel, which in turn will reduce power output. higher octane is more resistant to knock which keeps the ECU from pulling timing and why there is more "power" from higher octane.

on a side note, when making the switch from 87 to 93 doing the fuse pull, i think the ECU still has to go through a slight relearn process before you see the full potential from the higher octane. its not that it resets the fuel tables, just flips the switch back to using the high octane table vs low octane table. but i would think the rest of the parameters that adjust real time would need to relearn to the high octane settings over a period of given time or distance. i could be wrong about that so feel free to correct me.
