Yes, Apple has invented and innovated. To say they haven't is like saying the GT500 isn't anything special and Ford completely failed and anything good about it they copied from the Camaro.
Apple is doing something special right now and yes some of that is simply perception. But the customer experience is unique. The mystique is unique. When is the last time you saw anyone line up at the Samsung store for their latest phone? Motorola? They don't even have stores. So every time Apple has a new product (not very often with annual refreshes) the TV and news is full of pictures of people lined up to buy. Wait until Sept. 21 and see if it happens again. That alone builds the mystique of Apple. The Apple Store is a giant marketing juggernaut all by itself just from that regard. Every time you go to the mall, their stores are jammed. What does that do for impressions?
Apple may not and likely is not the technology giant. But all in, manufacturing, quality, marketing, sales, customer experience, there isn't much to rival it.
The companies that do outsell it, outsell it on price.
