Your options are wide open.
My advice is start with 9mm because its cheap and readily available. It is deadly enough for personal defense.
Glock is reliable and easy to maintain.
I have a few you are welcome to compare and a range close by where we can shoot anything you want to try. I will be in town this week if you care to demo a few.
