but if they can't find a record for the mechanical key (mine came with a tag with a barcode on it) and he has to call a locksmith, well, I'd look harder for one of those keys.

Yes at one time you just needed the chip in the key but any original keys would not work. I was stuck in Kansas one time in a rental and a locksmith cut the key with the key code from the rental co. and I went through a series of turn the key turn the key off hold down the brake peddle for 10 minutes etc.
