First, a semi automatic rifle is just that, a semi auto rifle. An AR15 with a registered auto sear or FA firing group registered under the NFA is considered an assault rifle because it allows multiple rounds to be fired with one pull of the trigger. Last I checked Walmart does not sell any such firearm. I dare you to try and find one. An AR15 DOES NOT qualify to be an assault rifle if it has a "select fire switch" unless it can expell more than one round per trigger pull. A select fire switch doesn't mean squat. It is about what the firearm can do.

Second, just because it has a pistol grip, telescoping stock, flash hider, or looks black does not make it an assault rifle. I can configure a 10/22 with these parts...are you still going to call it an assault rifle? Technically a 10/22 is no different in function than an AR15 besides the caliber that it shoots. Better yet, how about a rimfire AR15?

I would not take everything you hear on the television to be accurate or the truth. The facts speak for themselves.
Ok, but you know just as well as I do, that an AR-15 can have a fire select switch allowing it to become full auto, which is what I was getting at. They can be fully automatic. It is STILL an AR-15.

Also, since you live in Cali, won't this AR-15 you mentioned be classified as an "assault weapon"? The law says:
  • (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
    • (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
    • (B) A thumbhole stock.
    • (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
    • (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
    • (E) A flash suppressor.
    • (F) A forward pistol grip.
This does specifically say a semi-automatic... and yes, I'm aware that the bullet button takes away it's characteristic of having a detachable magazine.

Anyway, my point being is that if you went to Arizona, purchased the AR-15 from Wal-mart, and brought it back to Cali, would it be legal? No... because they would consider it an "assault weapon" and you would have to modify it.

So to blanket statement that an AR-15 "can not be" is really just... not correct.
