A few years ago I went to an aeronautical conference and convention where the celebrity keynote speaker was Cliff Robertson. (Remember him?)
Now for those that don't know, Cliff Robertson was a big time pilot in real life.
He was in France filming a movie for a periond of time. To occupy his free time he would fly around the countryside in a private plane. At some point it occurred to him that he was not familiar with French civil aviation rules. He wondered what the minimum altitude for flight was allowed while he was sightseeing. He asked around, but no one seemed to know. He later made a point to visit an officer of the French government to ask him the question. The government official seemed distracted and resentful of the intrusion. He made the pretense of attempting to find the answer, then without looking up, gave the answer as if he had just made it up "Eight feet."
Robertson was incredulous "Eight feet! Why eight feet?"
The French bureaucrat looked up at him and said "Because Monsieur, there are no eight foot Frenchmen!"
Yep, he was one of several great celebrity spokespersons for aviation back a few (many) years ago along with Danny Kaye, Arthur Godfrey and we will never forget John Denver. Of course we have Harrison Ford and John Travolta bearing that torch today.

Ah the French... Don't get me started... I've had a couple of experiences dealing with their "my way or the highway" attitude with some of our work trying to harmonize with ICAO Standards, hence my opinion that the reason the US has many filed differences with ICAO SARPs. They tend to be quite vocal and seem to get their way more often than not. Enough said...
