I'm with Pete on this. Plus personal experience.
My buddy had a mid 80's Chev 4x4 with 300,000 miles on it. He changed the oil every 3-4000 miles. The thing ran like a top and burned no oil. My other buddy had the same truck with 275,000 miles on it. He changed his oil about every 5-7000. His truck smoked and the lifters sounded like a sewing machine, then it started knocking. Done.
