I actually have a wild theory on this topic based on the idea that someone actually could tell what was going to happen between the ancient Central American past and 2012 CE.
Let's assume for a moment that a Mayan discovers the gift of telling the future. We have to assume that the person is doubted by contemporaries for this gift, so some events may not be recorded. When the gift is shown to be accurate, the person is conscripted to predict the future of the world as a prophet. Having been the only person capable of doing this, there would be no previous writings about the future before this person or after this person. In other words, when this person dies, no one can keep writing the future.
Flash forward to the recent past. The modern world discovers writings that outline catastrophes and major world events that abruptly end in 2012 CE. In effect, the world assumes that there are no dates after the last date listed when this is false. The truth might be that the Mayan prophet died, never being able to teach the gift to anyone else.
Think of how long it would take to read the future. There were probably prayers and rituals that would psychologically or spiritually make possible the gift of telling the future. Plus, the prophet would have a life besides just reading the future. Only so much of the future can be told in a few hours each day or week. Eventually, the person's life would have to end, and it would have been much earlier than the modern life expectancy of the same region.
In conclusion, it is possible that the end date (2012 CE) merely represents the end of the life of the prophet who could read the future. Alternatively, it could be a date where a new prophet would be capable of the same task or an end to world civilizations.
I'm just brainstorming, so don't hold me to this. I just wanted to put out a big theory and see what you thought.
