2012 V6 RPM / Shift Question

Hello everyone.

Please forgive my ignorance as I am newer to the Camaro line. I drove one and fell in love and bought it.

My question for today.

When utilizing the paddle shifters does the computer have a safety where it will not allow the engine to damage itself if the RPM's reach a certain level?

I let it touch the first red line and shifted right away earlier, and I want to be sure that I am not damaging my engine.

Does Chevy build in a safety ratio? For example, my tach reads that last red line at 8K. But is the engine rated to 8.5 or 9 before potential damage?

I heard of a rev limiter. Does this work while driving or only while rev'ing in neutral?

Any info is great.

Thanks guys.
