Yeah Alaska does have a lot of oil but what I'm referring to is a separate issue. Shale oil is basically a solid substance that, when heated, can be made into crude oil. It's a lengthy process (like 2 years to finish the heating process) but there are enough shale oil deposits within the US to eliminate our dependency on foreign oil for approx 100 years.

For comparison, the US shale oil reserves are even larger than the crude oil deposits in Saudi Arabia.

Frankly the gov needs to start focusing on promoting shale oil initiatives or other alternate fuel source initiatives rather than creating mpg regulations like CAFE in my opinion.
