If the valve is mistakingly left open then no oil accumulates, and no PCV (positive crankcase evacuation) takes place as the system is broken.

Here are some pictures to follow with Matts explanation.....and this is with most catchcans that use a standard pet**** for a drain:

Threads extended out is closed as it pulls the drain seal into the seat:

Threads retracted into the can is open, as it raises the dran seal off the seat allowing liguid to drain past and out:

Also, the center of the RX can (on all models) is the inlet and is always connected to the crankcase outlet (valley cover or the valve cover barb that stock has a line from it to the intake manifold vac barb) and the outer checkvalves (single or dual) are always the outlet(s) leading to the vacuum source. If connected backwards that also defeats the PCV flow as the flow is only traveling away from the can preventing backflow during WOT.

geez, I sat here like a jackass with this thing on my car for almost 2 months now wondering why I couldnt get anything to drain out of it and if it was working or not. Would have been nice if this was described in the instructions, maybe it was and they just didnt make any sense to me, but this design is like completely opposite as what you would expect. You would expect it to work like any normal bleeder screw but it's the opposite. Now knowing this I was able to get a little bit to drain out, and it does appear that the RX can is working better than the cheap $20 chinese can I had on before.
