I'd think that people who currently own stick-shift cars would still be entitled to respond if at any time in their past they'd bought at least one car with an automatic.
I've owned a few automatics, though they're a ways back in the past. Didn't regret or even think twice about getting any of them. Take that as a "no regrets" response - that might not have been expected.
What's happened since is irrelevant, other than we've still not regretted buying any of the cars we have now or have had.
Like was said earlier, make your transmission choice based on your best reasons for you. If you don't choose out of blind habit, impatience, peer pressure, or some poll telling you what other people think you should have, you'll be far less likely to end up with regrets. Sorry to hear of a couple of folks who didn't see their own preference clearly enough to overcome the external influences.
