To know if a breather is necessary you remove the intake tube that goes to your Throttle body and pass a paper towel and see if any oil stains it. If it does then you have oil passing through the clean side like the dirty. There is an alternative to the breather but the breather is the cheapest and easiest way (the Alternative is the 1LE Clean side oil separator i believe its $140 from Maurren at Rodgers chevy and this is the most effective way but for most applications is a slight over kill in my opinion). If you plan to get a breather definitely buy the Rx one. It has an integrated check valve to monitor the air flow and it also has the one way valve to allow it to pass emissions testing.
