I bought a 5th generation Camaro. In 2009 I had the choice of models, from an LS thru an SS. I decided on an SS, I then had to decided what options I wanted on the car, one being an RS appearance package.

you'll find a complete history on the Camaro and the various monikers that have come and gone over each generation of the Camaro and the reasons.

At the end of the day, you can call it what ever you want, but history will record that the 5th generation was an SS/RS.

Either way this debate has gone on for ever
