The Dexos standard essentially requires a semi synthetic at a minimum. Usually synthetics help with oil consumption because they have lower volatility, that is they don't convert to gas when hot as easily. Your dealer is wrong.

You should Google the V-6 and oil consumption. My guess is that it is due to crankcase ventilation, which can suck liquid oil (as well as any boiled off to gas) in through the air intake if not balanced correctly. See all the threads on catch cans. It gets worse and worse over time because the residue from the oil that is burned tends to accumulate in the cylinders and gum up the piston rings causing more oil to get sucked in etc etc. In this extended case regular oil may burn more completely (due to its lower volatility/flash point) and not leave as much residue, so the oil burning levels off at some point.
