GT500's make reliable, driveable 800hp cars on premium unleaded without ever touching a valve cover. And were talking about a car you wouldn't know wasn't stock in most situations. And that is a major part of the cars draw, the ridiculous power that can be made for cheap. If you want to crank out that kind of power in a Camaro SS, have it act like it was made for it, and do so in reliable trim, you'll shell out some serious coin.

If you are looking for a simple, bolt on car to get you into the 500hp range, and a Vette is off the table, the Camaro owns the market right now. This is particularly true if you want to accomplish the same naturally aspirated. Want more than that? Unless you are brand loyal the GT500 is going to get you there easier and cheaper.
I agree and disagree with you on some aspects. Yes Ford has allways had the upper hand on aftermarket support and go fast for cheap. And today with Ford engines are pretty good for making and holding high HP. But if your comparing a brand new SS and GT500 the price differance and weight the SS will give you a head start for modding. Brand loyalty aside and all that other BS, the SS might still win out in the mod/dollar war(ricer excuses some will say).

The only weak point in the LSx engines for years are the pistons and rods everything else could be left alone for serious power. Upgrade the the pistons, rods and the engine LSx could be a stong reliable motor, along with a FI, cam, bolt ons and heads. So for ~15k(just a guess) with endless combos on top of a base price of a SS you maybe at or under the base price of a stock GT500. We can go on for days mod VS mod discussion. Just my .02
