More accurately, GM didn't want to invest the $$ into the Camaro to meet those regs. The generation was getting long in the tooth plus slumping sales, and the impending regs were stacked against it. Thus, it was put on hiatus. Exact reason(s) that triggered the plug pull were not entirely disclosed to me.

I'm thinking GM needed to see that the Camaro was worth a 5th gen back in the late 90s early 2000s. So either they didn't see a demand OR they weren't really investing in the next generation at the time anyway.

I'm sure Scott has better and more accurate info.
