We run on a written budget and unless a true emergency comes up, we stick to the plan. But I know my limits, and a ZL1 or GT500 is not fitting in the plan. I can't afford a near $1000 third car payment and keep the system going that will allow for my goal of $1,000,000+ in my 401k to retire on. I also have all of the benefit options maxed out and that pulls about $600 a month from my pay. I could reduce the family benefits, but that's not a wise choice in my opinion just to buy myself a car that's out of my league. I'm selfish to a point, but I try to make sure I don't shoot my own foot off!

You are doing it right. I stuffed as much as I possibly could into deferred compensation for 29 years when I was working. Even after I was divorced and giving up a piece of it I'm still well off! I waited until I retired at 53 to buy my ZL1. I no longer have a
wife over me trying to to tell me how to spend the money. That way I can enjoy it. My kids are grown and taken care of so time for ME to enjoy myself. The thing you don't want to do is sit on your money and not ever buy what you want. Can't take it with you and don't leave it all for someone else to spend, that what you worked for to begin with. Just my 2 cents.
