The gas gauge reading at various levels is most likely a short in the power wire to the sender unit, probably above the tank and probably a small crack in the insulation that only causes a short intermittantly when the car is moving.
Does the gauge change when the car is not running (key on) and sitting still?
My 2001 TA had this problem, hard to find but easy to fix.
