Wow that's horrible! I have picked up a few things in parking lots too--they should be able to patch it, but I agree you may have to convince them because of future speed.
I've run over someone's keys in a parking lot...same damage as a knife. That was patched successfully.
In a Home depot parking lot I ran over a box cutter...patched fine.
A week after I got a G6 I managed to get a screw in the side wall--no patch for that. Got stuck in Ohio for 3 extra days while we waited for a new tire and it was $300 :(
