Seeing pictures of a car vs. seeing one up close and personal does make a difference if you're interested in it. Like a Ford Focus? I don't care so it wouldn't matter.
When they released the 3rd gen...hated the picture of the profile. Saw one in person and it was quite better than I thought because I could walk around it, touch it and sit in it. I ordered a new 82 Z28...
4th gen pics came out...ouch. EXPOSED WIPERS? WTF? HOW UGLY!!! Ended up buying a 93 Z28...98s came out. Ugh...the picture of new nose looked like a catfish face. Ended up ordering my 02 SS and the wife got her 02 Z28. MAJOR difference.
5th gen came out. I liked it right away from the unveil. But in person, I got to see just how FAT looking the car's ass is. Wasn't a deal breaker though. This is a case of the opposite effect. But wasn't bad enough to not buy one.
5th gen refresh pics...wasn't super excited about the tail lights or chrome piece right away. More and more pics/different angles came out and the more I saw, the more I liked. I do like how the ZL1 kept its nose and upgraded the taillights. Kinda neat actually.
So yes, pictures are a far cry from real life. Ask anyone who's done one of those online dating things.
