I am out of warranty too and think that this kind of obvious manufacturing defect should be covered still. I mean how many times are you allowed to move your seat? Heck mine is only used in 5% of my miles. The light came on once and went off then about a couple months later came on and stayed on.
Have you had any luck in finding the sensor mat for sale on its own? I followed the link above and there was no price listed. I really wnat the dealer to run those final reprogram steps to clear and reset the system before I invest too much money in it though. They said I have code b0074 and b0081, but the extra 2 digits are not listed.

If you have a tear in your mat the passenger presence sensor then to me you would just need that replaced but it would still have to be taken to the dealer to be re-zeroed. That is the part that senses the weight of the passenger. I agree seems that this is a common problem with these airbag sensors and modules but apparently not enough to make them do a recall.
I haven't bought any of the parts yet. The part under the seat that is the thin mat is called the passenger presence sensor part# 20972507 yes I have gotten quotes for the prices on the part. The airbag module (small black box) part #92244691
