The sector time are real. It take a very good driver to put all the sectors together to hit that theoretical time. With a great driver that knows the car and track the goal isn't to equal the best theoretical lap, it is to better it. Knowing the track inside and out is mission critical. When we ran the Mustang Camaro Supercar Shootout for Hot Rod Magazine I used a Gm engineer / driver John Buttermore. John knows Gingerman inside and out. John ran 20 something laps with both cars.
The difference between his fastest and slowest lap in the Mustang was 1/100th of a second. Compared to the theoretical fastest lap in the Mustang John was 1/1000th off.
He sucked in the Camaro. There was a full 1/10th of a second difference between his fastest and slowest laps. On the theoretical with the Camaro he completely blew it. He was 1/100th off.
To be this consistent requires countless hours of seat time in the car and on he track. The neither Adam Dean or the Z/28 have not been at the Ring long enough IMO to expect that kind of consistency. Those killer C6 Vette numbers came years into the C6 program. #3 can speak directly to this so I'll ask him.
Jim,
1. How many trips and approximately how many hours of track time were logged in the C6 program at the Ring?
2. How many laps or hours did Jim Mero have at the Ring in a Vette when he posted the 7:19 and 7:22?
