Obviously the P-51 association is the one you're supposed to be making with "Ground speed" on the speedometer and while that's cool once you fully grasp the relationship, that probably does reach a bit too far for all those folks who won't.
Those who aren't airplane buffs (you) or WWII history buffs (edit - I just realized what day today is) or old enough to remember when the
Mustang was only the name of an airplane still in active U.S. military service (me) won't make the connection unless Ford conspicuously points it out.

Mind if I ask why you don't care for V8 power elsewhere? Would it make any difference if the V8 had a flat crank or came stock with an X-pipe and had a different sound? Just curious (and FWIW I care less about cylinder count than whether the performance suits me).
