I used Sharpie Fabric pens and just drew across the stitching then wiped with a very damp rag. Was a lot faster then your method. Not saying yours is wrong, I just don't have that kind of patience.
I used Meguires leather cleaner afterward to get anything left over that the damp rag missed.
Also I to tried some shitty Fabric pen from the fabric store and Hated it. It worked like the Sharpie but man the color was  .
