The rim is always the outside edge of something. You have a glass, but the top of it is called the Rim, you have a Canyon but the top edge is the rim of the canyon. The rim of the wheel is the part that holds the tire on.
The center of the wheel is called the hub. The hub and rim together make a wheel.
