I think the sheet metal also has a recessed area for the insert to mount to. If you just cut a hole in your hood and drill mounting screw holes then I think the insert will sit higher than your hood (i.e. not flush like the 14's). Maybe you already thought of this and it's no biggie for you but I thought I would mention it.
If you do make it work please post some pics as I know some of us would really like to see how it looks on a pre '14 hood!
