I've used RainX for years. You can actually use it to remove bug residue from your windshield. I also recently learned you can use a clay bar on your windshield as well. I think this accomplishes the same thing as the steel wool. The advantage that steel wool has is it is cheaper and I imagine you can re-use it more than clay.
