Still sound fishy to me....
In the end it's a judgement call by the local GM rep and if you push, he can get the engineers involved and they WILL deduce the exact cause of the failure, at your expense if they don't find a manufactures defect.
It all boils down to who's got the deepest pockets so if I were you I'd take any offer they make, it might be all you get.
