Pearls do not need a white basecoat. My Black car has a Blue Pearl in it. I watched the process from start to finish and no white was ever used in the painting of my car. And the blue is KILLER.

Black, dark gray's and dark blue's are the exceptions. These colors are dark enough that the color of the base coat won't effect the outcome that much. Other colors especially light colors such as Sunrise Yellow, require a white base to achieve it's true color. Using black and gray base will darken most colors and yellow while darkening some colors can also add a yellow tint as well.
