Black, dark gray's and dark blue's are the exceptions. These colors are dark enough that the color of the base coat won't effect the outcome that much. Other colors especially light colors such as Sunrise Yellow, require a white base to achieve it's true color. Using black and gray base will darken most colors and yellow while darkening some colors can also add a yellow tint as well.
