Well a few things at play. In 1998 both suspension and tires are far and away better than anything in the muscle car era.
Take a 3500lbs car (approx of a road runner in 1970) with that HEMI - that is 354whp. Typically i find that automatics take about 100hp off of the flywheel to the rear wheels
So 450hp.
I think the motors made the HP but i also believe there was some "fudging" going on. The other parts of the car however, just suck.
A few years back a Pro Stock racer by the name of Max Naylor was having a hard time competing with the big boys in Pro Stock like Jeg Coughlin.
He made a simple switch - ditched his goodyear slicks for hoosiers and qualified #1!!!!
Same setup other than tire and he went from nobody to king of the hill....for a few races. Then NHRA banned using tires outside of the regular Goodyears.
