^^ I don't experience any of the negative issues you describe above with my MGW.

Are you sure everything is installed correctly? If so, maybe it is just a matter of adjusting the boot or shifter a little. Does it have the same issues when you don't have the boot on? Meaning, take the boot off and install everything without it and drive it around.

I see you have a V8 and I have a V6 so it is not apples to apples however I still think the questions above are valid.
