Here is the deal. GM and pretty much every other vehicle manufacturer recommends you come in about every 15000-20000 miles and pay the service department $150 or so to clean up all the crap that is building up in your intake manifold and on the valves. Very few people actually do it so what happens is that over time your fuel economy and performance both suffer.
Is it required? No, there are three options. 1) You can ignore it completely and just let your engine gunk up. 2) You can pay the service department to repeatedly clean up the mess. 3) You can invest in a good catch can to protect your engine and save you money.
