Exactly! It was always my understanding that they were placed on cars in the 24 Le Mans. Since drivers were from different countries (right hand drives), the hash marks were placed on the driver's side so the incoming driver would know which side the steering wheel was on. A second theory has been if a racing team had more than one car, they'd put one stripe on the first car, two on the second, so and so forth.
