In most cars, it's not actually a good sign.

In our cars, it's most likely a momentary rich condition caused by sudden 'jump off the gas' and in which unburned fuel mix gets out on the exhaust stroke and detonates in the exhaust, and is therefore sorta par for the course and normal.
