There is not enough rainfall to support grass in the desert areas.
Last time I ran at Beech Bend, out of 5 days, 3 rained. This was in August.
Bowling Green, average rainfall, 50" a year.
Vegas? 4" a year. Out of all the times I've raced there, it has never rained, regardless of time of year. It does get snow every decade or so though.
