Companies are coming up with 300HP-400HP cars with better weight distribution and the capability of 30+ MPG fuel economy. We do have a much larger capacity and capability with today's technology, but I think the general expectation that people have for cars has increased as much if not more.
I would say that for many people looking for fuel efficiency, 30+ MPG just isn't enough anymore. They are looking towards the hybrid cars and battery assisted cars that get well over 40 MPG. Which at this time don't make all that much power.
With the growing focus on global warming, we might see a huge crackdown on emissions within the next ten years that forces most cars to be of a hybrid or maybe even fully electric design.
