At what temp should we not drive this winter?
I know many of you guys up north have the painful task of having to put your 1LE's to rest over the winter. I really feel for you guys there. But what about us in a more moderate region?
Exactly what teperature would you guys suggest NOT to drive in?
First thing is my 1LE is primarily a weekend driver. And it's driven mostly in rural areas. And the areas I drive never have salt put down for winter conditions.
I'm not worried about loss of traction. I've already driven my car in 39F temp range a couple times and it has MUCH better traction and road holding ability then my previous 2 vehicles. Which were both modded trucks. Light rearends and high horsepower makes for "butt-pucker" driving at times. So I know to drive slow and careful when conditions demand it. And temps below 50F I drive very careful around curves and when accelerating in the 1LE.
So my main concern is temperatures that might damage the tires. I am aware of the 20F level that they say DO NOT drive at. Possible damage is very possible at that point and colder. But what about temps below 32F if it's not persay driven when its still that cold. Meaning if it gets down to 30F at night, but the temp gets up to 40F around noon when I need to take a drive?
Here in the rural/country area where I have my 1LE on weekends it freezes perhaps 10-15 weekends a year. Perhaps 2-3 of those weekends might approach the 20F area. I'd also estimate 14 of those 15 weekends it gets above freezing by noon time. It's VERY rare we stay below freezing.
.
So does this general plan make sense? -
1-Any time the forcast says it will approach 20-25F - keep the 1LE garaged.
2-Any time the forcast says it it will freeze AND and stay close to 32F during the day - keep the 1LE garaged.
3-anytime the forcast estimates nights to get in the 30-34F range, but warm up to 40F or before car would be driven - ok to drive the 1LE that weekend (with caution of course)
4-anytime ice or snow is in the forcast (which is very rare) - keep the 1LE garaged.
.
These questions might seem silly to some, but for me, driving my 1LE is my MAIN source of entertainment at this point in my life. I live and work M-F in the city, driving a little Kia ecobox to do so. But weekends I take the 1LE up to a country house I own. Nice fresh air, lots of trees, AND twisty country roads to drive on. Weekends at the country house and driving my 1LE is what makes my work week bearable. I DREAD the coming weekends that I wont be able to drive my baby.
Oh, lastly - I CANNOT purchase winter tires & wheels at this time. That is perhaps the plan a couple winters down the road, but my current budget doesn't permit the $2500 it would require for a "toy" expenditure this winter.
Suggestions and opinions on the "general plan" above are welcome.
