Politicians realized long ago that talk was much easier than action, and people understand quick fixes much better than real fixes. So, talk about a quick fix and the people will go along with it. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers (in fact, its impossible to overestimate their power, but try anyway).

If either candidate were to say something along the lines of "We will ensure fair trade policies with nations who export goods which compete directly with domestic manufacturers. Also, manufacturing facilities which operate for a foreign corporation will not be given any incentives beyond what their domestic competition is given." Thats the point of what they would be saying, but since no politician can talk straight, it would take about 5x as many words to say it (minimum). Compare that to "no gas tax" or "make more competitive cars". Add to it the political inertia that seems to resist actually doing things in the interest of the people and getting a politician to announce a real plan then follow through with it become nearly impossible.

Side note, I think that government would function much better if it contained half as many people. Fewer back doors and each person is twice as responcible, making them less likely to defer to higher ups. And get rid of lobby groups too. Sure you toss the good with the bad, however since many cancel out anyway (big oil vs eco, tabacco vs anti tobacco, etc) it will get rid of favours and the people will be able to be heard once again (as misguided as they often are, it is kinda the point of a democracy). If only I could become Prime Minister . . .

Oh right, not a political forum.
