Sure the Camaro may end up with the same horsepower/torque ratings as the Vette, but the Vette is always lighter, better handling, and an overall better performing car.

Did Vette owners really get upset when the 4th Gens had the Vette's LT1 and then the LS1, and later the GTO had the Vette's LS2?

It seems like it is the standard operating procedure to drop a Vette power plant into the F-bodies.
I have no idea. I just know that when we have discussed possible engines for the Camaro on this and other forums some people say that the Camaro may not have the same engine initially because GM doesn't want to step all over the Corvette community's toes. Realistically, I am not sure if it is a concern or not, I am just going by what I hear.

With the older LS1 engines, they were rated at a lower HP than the Corvette LS1s even though they consistently dyno'ed at the same, and in a lot of cases more, horsepower than the Corvette, and it didn't really seem to effect the corvette sales at all. I think most people realize that the Corvette is engineered to a higher standard in terms of lighter weight materials and greater aerodynamics to justify the price difference.
