The exhaust valves close above 1K rpm and open again over 3K rpm. If you pull the fuse, the valves stay open all the time. The exhaust sounds a lot better during average driving because the valves are open.

Pulling the fuse is very easy. The fuse is located in a fuse box in the trunk near the passenger side wheel. You have to pull up the carpeting to find it.
