The other thing that killed the Fiero -
The 1990 Fiero concept absolutely destroyed the 'Vette in every performance metric. Price point and fuel economy, too. It had a high-revving 3.4L DOHC engine (Lumina LTZ engine, basically) with a turbocharged variant available.
This put the nail in the Fiero's coffin.
That being said - I'd buy another Fiero in a heartbeat if I could. Great memories in my 1986 GT.
