After playing with, and having this SAME problem of waiting FOREVER just to index 2000 songs, I found a slightly quicker way. It'll require a little bit of time still though.
The MAJOR problem (I think) with the indexing time is, the head unit tries to PLAY songs WHILE indexing, which eats of USB line bandwidth. I've found NO way of pausing or stopping playback of the USB key itself, and switching inputs STOPS all indexing from taking place.
During one of my LONG trips across the state, I discovered that the head unit STOPS playback, but CONTINUES indexing during a phone call! It turned a normal 1 HOUR long index time to a short 10 minute index time. So, my fix for LONG index times (at least for MY head unit), is to talk on the phone for the first 10 minutes of my flight... at least until I get the update from my dealership.
Now, if I could only STOP it from REINDEXING everytime I start the car, I'd be slightly happier. Doesn't it seem more intelligent to write a file to the USB key (or device) that the head unit can read instead of recounting and organizing everything in internal memory? Just a question.
