I would think The smaller filter would bypass quicker during constant high rpm driving. I believe also that bypass valve is located within the filter acording to the ls7 istallation manual. The pump has a pressure relief so it would not over pressure the filter."Normally" So maybe "just a guess" larger filter media is required when using 15w50 & high rpm to have a larger percentage of filtered oil. Twenty years ago we would remote mount the filter away from the engine and remove the oil filter bypass valve. This Would allow us to use a larger filter or two tandem filters to gain 100% oil filtration. Also kept the temp@ 10 deg cooler.
