And you answered your own question why he used dawn. It removed all the previous wax (applied by the dealership so I guess all their cars will fade too), so the zaino had a nice clean slate to work off of.

Claying the car will have no negative effect short or long term on the paint/clearcoat and in fact may improve longevity of the paint.
