Shops do replace diff seals with crush sleeves without taking the diff out. You have to count the number of pinion gear threads sticking out from the nut and mark nut and pinion gear so you put the nut back in exactly the same place; therefore, not changing the preload. The diff seal is about $15 from the dealer.

Where the wheels fall off this a bit is your supposed to use a new diff nut every time because you have to stake it. To do it without pulling the diff and resetting it up, you have to be willing to reuse the existing nut.
