Your 4th gen experience is probably only part of your tendency to brake early. It's the way you've been doing virtually all of your braking on the street (early and easy), and you basically took that technique - slightly modified - with you to the track. Hardly anybody ever chooses to brake on the street even close to the way they should be braking on the track.

Don't feel bad, I'd be willing to bet that most new people to track days do exactly the same thing, and it may take a little time before you place enough faith in your brakes (and yourself) to delay it.
