On the lower ones I used a pair of neelde nose to squeeze the retainer together to get it out. On the uppers I broke the retainer on the passenger side. It clipped back on pretty solid so I don't think it will come loose just because the retainer is missing, if it does there are a lot of things to put in that little hole in place of the retainer. If you want pureness get new ones from GM. They are still a bitch to get back in place.
