On both aspects (metal from filter threads in the oil and oil foaming from contact with sealant?), if the engine runs, with either of these conditions, for more than a few minutes, DAMAGE HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE!

With foamy oil (BS #2), it would take a little longer. Under any kind of load and RPM, anything lubed by oil would begin self destructing.

Cause of failure (story #1) is much more believable. Saw it happen hundreds of times in the mid 90's with WIX manufactured oil filters on Cummins B Series Diesels. But the fact remains, once a piece of metal enters through the "clean side" of the oil filter (center, where the threads are), the engine is toast (just may take a few minutes for it to totally destroy)!

I call BS.....
Keep in mind I did not write it. Just some info. Thus the reason why I'll be looking at the filter and sending a sample out for testing.

In our Pro Stock motors we had at lease 12 Magnets epoxyed throughout the Motor just for inspection purposes.
