Shouldn't it be just a fix it ticket. You put plate back on. You go find a non busy cop (maybe finishing his lunch). You DO NOT sneak up behind him and scream "I need help!!" You ask politely if, when he has a moment if he could look at signing off a fix it ticket for you. If he says yes, show him the citation and then the corrected car.
He signs it off, you say "Thank you sir for all your help and for keeping us safe every night." (you can add more sh*t here if you want, but don't push it.) You follow directions on back of cite where it tells you where to mail it an how much money to include for court costs (usually b/t $10 to $50). If you are incapable of finding stamps for sale in correct denomination, you can take the signed cite to court clerk. Pay them and they will give you an official receipt saying the violation has been corrected, the court costs are paid and that this guy holding this receipt had no idea about where to go to buy the correct stamp. (this stays on your permanent record for the rest of your life).
jk. I just never heard of a missing plate cite be a criminal offense where $200 bail has to be paid. Sounds a bit harsh.
